Perfectly perfect engagement session at the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower, Paris Engagement

Perfectly perfect engagement shoot at the Eiffel Tower

This engagement photo session at the Eiffel Tower was made in the heavens. Actually, it was seven years in the making! Nicole contacted me on a super warm Sunday morning, she was very excited because Mark, her boyfriend of seven years', had proposed to her the night before. She was thinking of doing an engagement session but didn't have a lot of time, as they were leaving in two days' time and wondered if I could photograph them in the afternoon.

I would have loved to, but photographing at the Eiffel Tower is generally not a good idea in the afternoon for a few reasons. First, it is crowded beyond belief, especially on the weekend. It's my belief that each couple should have the Eiffel Tower to themselves for their engagement session, or at least give the appearance. Second, photo sessions in spring and summer in the afternoon have very harsh light and is not flattering. No one wants to squint or look orange. So this leaves us with mornings. To be honest, I'm not a morning person at all. I was born at night and I can stay up all night, a "night owl" as they say. That said, when I became a professional photographer in Paris I learned one thing pretty quickly. Paris is better in the morning, magical even. It's typically quieter and more, I don't know the word--zen perhaps?

The forecast was for a 50% chance of showers and Nicole was worried about that a little. However, I explained that Paris in the rain can be quite lovely and the bonus is that there are usually many less people at the popular spots. We made plans then to meet the next morning.

The next morning there were a few rain drops, but nothing too pronounced, but we had very cloudy skies. Nicole was a bit concerned the photos may look too dark, but I assured her that the cloud cover was actually great as it provided a more soft, filtered light.

Nicole and Mark live in Syracuse, New York, and they had also been to Barcelona on their trip. Nicole said Mark's surprise proposal was not really expected, despite the fact they were in Paris, it was a huge surprise. She said her family members encouraged her to celebrate with an engagement photo session, but she wasn't quite sure about it. But finally she and Mark agreed it would be a good idea. I mean, how often are you in Paris? And, how often will you be engaged in Paris? Never again, probably, so it's a super special event worth celebrating!

We started our Paris photo session at the ubiquitous Trocadero area of the Eiffel Tower. As I'm here all the time, I have my special spots I love. But there is more to the Eiffel Tower than Trocadero, and I was excited to go for a little walk.

Other amazing views of the Eiffel Tower

After the Trocadero portion of our Paris engagement session, we took a little walk to one of my favorite little neighborhoods with a peek-a-boo view of the Eiffel Tower that is very romantic. But before we got there, Nicole commented on some stairs in the Trocadero gardens and asked if we could photograph there. I was delighted to do that! Then, next door, for a few peek-a-boo Eiffel Towers shots and then across the street as we walked toward the bridge of Bir Hakeim I spotted a super cute pink bicycle. Naturally, we did some fun photos with it, otherwise it would have been a lost opportunity.

The bridge of Bir Hakeim is my second favorite bridge in Paris, the Pont Alexandre being my first. I love the bridge itself, with its elegant ironwork and the view of the Eiffel Tower from there I find to be just magnificent. The only downside to this bridge is, well, it's a bridge. So you have traffic on both sides as well as pedestrians, cyclists and others taking photos. This just means you need a little patience is all, and I think the creation of the images really makes it all worthwhile!

Nicole and Mark were dream clients. Really friendly and fun, I had a wonderful start to my week thanks to them! I know they are going to be the happiest married couple ever, as they're already so in love and just delightful.

Congratulations Nicole and Mark, and thank you for choosing me to photograph your beautiful engagement in Paris!
