Midwesterners in Paris
I come from a place commonly known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota, in the United States. I was born and raised there and in 2004, I left for the sunny climes of Los Angeles. After ten wonderful years in Los Angeles, it was time to live my dream, and move to Paris. A lot of people ask me how I came to be in Paris. It’s a great question! I’d studied French all through high school and during the language study, we also learned about the culture. French culture, in addition to learning the language, really fascinated me. When I was in 10th grade I had the opportunity to be a temporary exchange student in the Paris region, and stayed with a French family for a week. I went to school with the kids, who were in high school, ate the meals with the family, and generally learned how a typical French family lives. It was not all that different to how I lived, and we had that in common.
In 2011, I was in Paris at the tail end of a business trip, and I thought to myself, Wouldn’t it be cool if I had a little place here in Paris I could come to from time to time? That’s all it was, a little daydream. The next year I found myself back in Europe on business again, and this time, my dream DID come true! I ended up buying a very tiny, yet very cute apartment in the north east of Paris. This is still my home and the official office of Picture Me Paris!
When Alyssa contacted me about a photo session in Paris for herself and her husband Adam, I was happy to discuss it with her. She explained that they really just wanted some photos around the Eiffel Tower to commemorate their time in Paris. What a terrific idea, and great souvenir!
We met at the ever popular Trocadero, with its stunning views overlooking the Eiffel Tower on the other side of the river. Alyssa and Adam were warm and friendly, and it was so nice to spend some time with people from “back home”. Alyssa wore a really pretty flowy dress. Of course, anything goes, it’s what makes you most comfortable in terms of wardrobe, but Paris is really elegant and you can never go wrong by dressing up a little bit.
Love in their eyes
One thing was very clear from the start! Alyssa and Adam really love each other! You could absolutely see it in the way they interacted, and the way they looked at each other, in each other’s eyes. It was really tender and warmed my heart. That, plus their friendly and warm personalities, truly I felt like I’d just met two new friends!
After we finished photographing them at Trocadero, I took them to some of my absolute favorite spots for Eiffel Tower photography in Paris. One spot I rarely go to any more because last year the buildings were being refurbished and it wasn’t so pretty, but the work is done and it’s magnificent! Avenue Camoens is one of those special spots with a peek-a-boo view of the Eiffel Tower. From there, we went to one of the most scenic bridges in Paris, the Bir Hakeim bridge, for some early morning stunning photography.
When I photograph couples in Paris I aim for natural looks. That’s not to say I don’t give suggestions or directions, as an engagement photographer in Paris, working with couples who want to capture their time in Paris, I pay attention to small details. A small detail such as the position of the feet, or the hands. These things can make a huge difference. I’ll make a lot of suggestions but generally have couples looking away from the camera to capture “the moment”. Of course, we do some more traditional photos (looking at the camera) as each client wants, but it’s also a mix of distant photos with the Eiffel Tower and closer-up portraiture.
Photographs at the river in Paris
The last stop for Alyssa and Adam’s Paris couples photo session was my favorite spot, right down by the river. The river in Paris is called the Seine (pronounced C-E-N). The close-up view of the Eiffel Tower from here is magical and inspiring. I had so much fun capturing the love story of this pretty couple. I wish them the continued joy and happiness they felt in these moments in Paris!
