Lovely and elegant December holiday engagement session in Paris
Lovely and elegant December holiday engagement session in Paris. This was a truly elegant, fun and memorable engagement session in Paris, in the month of December, just before the Christmas holidays, and I feel so blessed to have been chosen as the Paris photographer for this gorgeous couple!
Michael, who lives in the United Kingdom, booked an engagement session on my web site for mid-December. Often, in mid-December in Paris we have a lot of rain and chilly weather, but this December has been rather mild and not as much rain as usual. which has been very nice. Rain doesn’t affect Paris photo sessions much, as long as you have a nice umbrella, a clear one works great, and don’t mind a little moisture, they can be some of the most beautiful and romantic photo sessions. Alas, on this Saturday, we had somewhat mild temperatures, mostly overcast and a bit of wind. When I was waiting for Michael and his fiancée to arrive, I’d popped into a nearby café at Trocadero, Cafe Kléber, for a vanilla and caramel tea. It was delicious and I was ready to start the day!
Michael booked the Platinum photo session, which includes two hours of Paris photography and two Paris locations. When he and his fiancée arrived, I couldn’t believe it. They literally looked like they stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine. Michael’s fiancée, Titi, was wearing the most elegant velvet gown, in a burgundy color. It fit her perfectly and had beautiful detail, including a slit for the leg, and I surmised that Titi must be a model the way she carried herself in the gown. I for sure know I couldn’t carry myself that elegantly, and Titi told me later that she had done some modeling. Michael was so handsome in his perfectly tailored suit, everywhere we went this morning they turned heads, and it’s easy to see why!
Beauty from the exterior is often obvious to see, especially as a photographer. Dressing well is always the key to gorgeous photographs in Paris because the background really encourages it. Back home, you may be photographed for your engagement at a beach, or in the woods, or even around town. Those are gorgeous backgrounds, but Paris takes it to another level. Being photographed with icons like the Eiffel Tower and the magnificent architecture of the Louvre, well, it takes it to another level. Even people who don’t feel particularly photogenic, or who don’t really care to have their photo taken at all, when dressed in beautiful suit, or a beautiful gown, feel fantastic and you can’t believe how beautiful your photos will be! So I always recommend my clients dress up a little more than they usually would, and you’ll see other couples in Paris being photographed who are also dressed up, so it won’t feel odd at all.
While Michael and Titi obviously are beautiful to look at, it was the beauty in their hearts that touched me most. First off, they were ridiculously in love. It was so clear, and so touching. I loved it! Made me giddy, even!
I always love to hear the stories of my clients, and Michael and Titi have such an interesting story. They were both born and raised in the African nation of Eritrea, a small nation of 5.7 million people, just above Ethiopia and Kenya in eastern Africa. I’ve been to North Africa (Morocco) and Western Africa (Namibia) as well as Cape Town, South Africa, and I admit I don’t know a thing about Eritrea, but now I’ve met two people from this country, both gorgeous inside and out and seeing photos online of Eritrea, it looks beautiful! Both Michael and Titi left Eritrea, Michael moved to the UK and Titi to Los Angeles. They’d known each other as children, but only met up as adults again about a year ago at a friend’s wedding.
They really did.
They’ve been together ever since, and now Michael will move to Los Angeles, where I used to live, to be with Titi and start their married lives together. Now, they were in Paris celebrating their engagement. How exciting is that!
We began our day with various views of the Eiffel Tower, starting with the iconic view from Trocadero. Being that it’s the holiday season, I photographed them behind some white flocked Christmas trees, which I love to do in December. Then, off to two other fantastic Eiffel Tower view locations before hopping in a taxi and heading east.
We were going to the Louvre Museum next, the former royal palace, but first, Titi wanted to change her dress from the burgundy to a floral dress. Michael would also change his outfit. This is entirely optional, and the best way to do it, is to have a drink in a fun Paris café. I often choose Le Nemours as the café of choice, as it’s near the Louvre and is really nice. Of course, we had to photograph some classic Paris shots at the café with a champagne toast, after all, we’re celebrating an engagement!
After a bit of the bubbly (which Titi said helped warm her from the chill), I photographed this dynamic couple in the Palais Royal Gardens (I love the columns here), and then we walked across the street to the Louvre itself and showcased Michael and Titi with the Louvre as our backdrop.
I can’t say how much fun I was having, chatting with Michael and Titi, sharing bits about Paris with them, and photographing them was incredibly fun. They were up for anything, were very strong in the December chill, and were so easy to work with. I honestly didn’t want the day to end. By now, the sun had come out and it was really nice. I asked them if they would like to end across the street in the Tuileries Gardens. In December, there’s a little carnival and Christmas market. They were totally up for it, so I headed there with the intention of capturing them with some cotton candy. Unfortunately, the cotton candy vendor was not open yet, but they did have a sleigh!
We had. So. Much. Fun. But I did realize it was time to call it quits, as fun as a Paris photo session is, it can get a bit tiring, and I didn’t want to wear out my welcome. I have a lot of energy and can keep going and going, but I know my clients have lots of other things they’d love to do while in Paris.
My profound thanks to Michael and Titi and congratulations on their engagement! They were so warm, fun, and I absolutely loved meeting them! I only hope I have the good fortune to photograph them again some day!
